Labour-hire owned apprentice training organisation, Skill Hire, fails to meet legislated obligations

MEDIA RELEASE | Wednesday, 22 June 2022

The ETU has yet again uncovered widespread and systemic mistreatment of apprentices. This time by Skillhire, a labour hire company owned Group Training Organisation, who have been under reporting portable long service leave entitlements.

Skillhire provide apprentice labour to construction companies throughout WA and have been owned by Go2 Recruitment, a labour hire firm since April 2021. They have now partnered up with Master Builders Western Australia as their preferred apprenticeship program partner.

The ETU is calling on the regulator, MyLeave, to conduct a full audit and prosecute Skillhire for their failure to comply with legislative requirements, to protect vulnerable workers like apprentices from being exploited, and to serve as a deterrent against further unscrupulous employers stealing wages and lawful entitlements from employees.

The ETU also calls on the McGowan Labor Government to ensure that the Act covering portable long service leave is strengthened sufficiently to ensure non-compliance is appropriately dealt with.

Quotes attributable to ETU Assistant Secretary Brendan Reeve:

“The systemic underpayment of apprentices in the labour-hire industry is a blatant attempt to undermine the security of our future workforce and should be called what it is: wage theft.”

“Unfortunately, this type of attack on vulnerable workers, such as apprentices, is the standard business model for many unscrupulous employers in WA.”

“Workers rely on a strong regulatory authority to ensure checks and balances are in place, but when breaches occur, dodgy employers are rarely held accountable in a meaningful way, thereby emboldening them to continue on as normal.”
