ETU WA Demands Immediate Action from Western Power as Worker Frustrations Mount Amid Cost-of-Living Crisis

PERTH, WA

16th October 2024

The Electrical Trades Union of WA (ETU WA) is intensifying its call for Western Power to address the pressing needs of its workforce, as the cost-of-living crisis continues to impact families across Western Australia. Despite numerous bargaining meetings, Western Power has made minimal efforts to resolve key issues raised by ETU members. Recent visits by Western Power to its depots—aimed at gauging employee reactions to what the union describes as an "insipid offer"—have only tested the resolve of dedicated workers.

ETU WA Secretary, Adam Woodage, expressed deep frustration over the lack of meaningful progress and criticized both Western Power's leadership and Energy Minister Reece Whitby for their inaction.

"Let me be clear: both the Energy Minister and the CEO of Western Power need to acknowledge the serious impact their inaction is having on the workforce that powers this state," Mr. Woodage said. "It is unacceptable that, during a time when families are struggling to make ends meet, those in charge are dragging their feet, offering well-below industry-standard remuneration."

With over 750 committed members employed by Western Power, the ETU WA is preparing to escalate its efforts. Mr. Woodage announced that members have filed for a protected action order with the Fair Work Commission and urged the network operator to take the matter seriously.

"Should Western Power refuse to bargain in good faith, members will use their collective strength to secure what they deserve," Mr. Woodage warned. He emphasized that ETU members do not take the decision to pursue protected industrial action lightly but feel they have been left with no choice. "Our members are dedicated workers who take pride in their role of powering this state, and industrial action is always a last resort," he said. "However, they are sick of being ignored and undervalued. If Western Power continues to dismiss their concerns, our members are prepared to take the necessary steps to protect their livelihoods."

Quotes attributed to Adam Woodage – ETU WA Secretary

"Our members are the backbone of Western Australia's power network, yet they are being treated as an afterthought in this bargaining process. Western Power must recognize the critical role these workers play and offer a fair deal that reflects the realities of the cost-of-living crisis."

"We will not stand by while Western Power neglects its duty to its workers. Our members have shown tremendous dedication, and it's time for Western Power to match that with real action—enough with the empty promises."
