WA construction workers have secured a major victory thanks to an eight-year long campaign by the ETU WA to fix the Construction Industry Portable Paid Long Service Leave Act 1985. The reforms that have been now passed by Parliament, finally close the loopholes that robbed workers of the entitlements they earned.
For too long, outdated laws meant workers missed out on long service leave while employers kept paying levies. Stand downs, time spent on workers’ compensation and even performing construction work from vessels in WA waters all left workers unfairly excluded. The ETU WA fought to put an end to these injustices – and won.
Importantly, the reforms deliver new protections for workers and their families facing hardship. Members living with terminal illness or permanent incapacity, as well as the families of those who pass away, will now be able to access pro-rata long service leave before the seven-year mark. This means financial relief will be available when it is most needed.
The legislation also strengthens the governance of the MyLeave board, ensuring the scheme is more accountable and effective for working people.
A Hard-Fought Union Win
This result is no accident. It is the product of years of tireless campaigning by ETU WA Lead Organiser Ian Gill and our members who never gave up on the fight for justice. It proves what can be achieved when workers stand together behind their union.
These reforms are a victory not just for our members but for thousands of construction workers across WA. They are a reminder that fairer laws and better conditions are w
on through collective action – and the ETU will always lead that fight.
